Wyoming

Wyoming - America in all its natural majesty. It is bounded on the north by Montana, on the east by South Dakota and Nebraska, on the south by Colorado and Utah, and on the west by Utah, Idaho and Montana. It is the ninth largest state in the United States containing 97,914 square miles and is made up of 23 counties.

Wyoming’s landscape is beautiful and breathtaking and varies from rolling grass-covered plains to stunning mountain ranges, rivers, lakes and forests. Natural wonders that have inspired everyone from Native Americans, and gold rush bound 49'ers to modern day travelers are everywhere in Wyoming.

From Old Faithful to Devils Tower, the forces of nature have sculpted amazing landscapes and geo-thermal features for our residents and visitors to enjoy. Yellowstone National Park and Hot Springs State Park boast numerous geo-thermal attractions. Many of the mountain ranges and wilderness areas throughout the state bring visitors to see the changing of fall colors, wildlife, and humbling mountain peaks

Other National Parks and Forests within Wyoming include: Grand Teton National, Devils Tower National Monument, Bighorn National Forest, Black Hills National Forest, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Medicine Bow National Forest, Shoshone National Forest, and Targhee National Forest.

The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of important mountain ranges. In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.

Wyoming’s largest cities are Cheyenne, Casper, Rock Springs, Gillette, Sheridan and Laramie, all with populations ranging from approximately 20,000-50,000. Wyoming offers 98 incorporated municipalities spread all throughout the state.

The beauty of Wyoming isn’t found only in our landscapes. Wyoming offers a cost of living that is equally impressive. In fact, in 2004, the Tax Foundation ranked Wyoming #1 out of 50 states in their Individual Income Tax Index for having no individual income tax.

The works of Wyoming's artists are on display in galleries throughout the state. For contemporary art, visit the Art Museum at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne and the Wyoming Arts Council Gallery in Cheyenne. The world's premier wildlife art collection is found in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, while Native American art is featured at the Midwest Gallery on the Wind River Indian Reservation at Fort Washakie.

Wyoming Theatre will hardly be upstaged. Special melodramas are produced for summer visitors in Cheyenne, Cody and Jackson, as well as year round performances at local theatres in many Wyoming communities, and at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.

The performing arts are not limited to theater alone, however. Cheyenne boasts a first-class symphony orchestra and Casper serves the northeastern part of the state with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra. During July and August, the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole attracts musicians from around the world to perform in a perfect setting - the base of the Tetons. The Great Music West Festival provides high quality symphony and chamber works to the Afton, Evanston and Bear Lake communities in southern Wyoming. The Sagebrush Western Folk Arts Festival entertains southern Wyoming communities with cowboy poetry, western music and storytelling, fine art exhibits, spinning, weaving and leather and wood demonstrations.

Jazz festivals in February and March highlight the winter months in Casper with the Casper College Kinzer Jazz Festival and in Powell with the Northwest Jazz Festival. Cody is home to the Yellowstone Jazz Festival. These festivals provide jazz education opportunities for youth, plus national and international jazz artists perform in public concerts.
