New York State
Take a look at the many different regions that the State of New York has to offer.
The Adirondacks
Part wildernesses, part civilization, the Adirondack region is both awesome in its beauty and accessible as an enormous outdoor playground. This wonderland contains 3,000 lakes and ponds, 2,000 miles of hiking trails, nearly 100 campgrounds, and 46 majestic high peaks.
Chautauqua-Allegheny
Picture a Victorian home in many-colored splendor, one of the grand old dames of architecture. You'll find them here, in this region where history has played out gently. The jewel of the region, the Chautauqua Institution, has roots in the last century and a vision of the next. You'll also delight in the Lucy-Desi Museum, Panama Rocks, the 1891 Fredonia Opera House and the natural beauty of the region, that will entrance you as it has many generations of families who love to vacation here.
Central-Leatherstocking
The Central-Leatherstocking region is rich with history and gorgeous landscapes. This area is rich with natural treasures. You can visit the spectacular waterfalls at Chittenango Falls State Park, or travel along pathways beneath the earth's surface at Howe Caverns or Secret Caverns, where you will see fascinating underground stone formations.
Capital-Saratoga
The Capital-Saratoga region is a delightful study in contrasts. The two icons of the Capital-Saratoga region are the historic Capitol in Albany, adjacent to the contemporary Empire State Plaza, and the elegant Saratoga Racecourse, in the charming community of Saratoga Springs. They are set off by a region known for its diversity, with Broadway shows at off-Broadway prices, antiquing, polo, water sports, national historic sites and a host of other cultural and outdoor activities.
The Catskills
Waterfalls, enchanting mountains, lush forests, and sparkling streams provide a picturesque setting for the Catskills region.
If you enjoy fishing, you will love visiting the famous Catskill Fly Fishing Center and nearby rivers in Livingston Manor. Bethel, the site of the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. If you are seeking the unusual, you will delight in the Kaatskill Kaleidoscope, the world's largest kaleidoscope, which looms above the horizon in Catskill Corners.
You will enjoy the Catskill Game Farm, Zoom Flume Water Park and a number of European-style wineries. When you want to sit back and enjoy the splendid view, hop on the Delaware & Ulster Rail Ride and take this historic train through the legendary Catskill Mountains.
Finger Lakes
It's true - there is a European flavor to these glacial lakes. Perhaps it's the charming wineries, reminiscent of those in the French provinces. Perhaps it is the peaceful canal that passes through the region. Whatever the reason, the Finger Lakes possess the mystery that makes for a memorable vacation. Science also is celebrated here, in Rochester, with its George Eastman house and photography museum; in Ithaca, at Sciencenter; and in Syracuse, with its Museum of Science and Technology.
The Finger Lakes, known among seasoned travelers as one of America's prime getaway vacation regions, offers you the great outdoors, wonderful heritage tours, and unlimited opportunities to feed the mind, body and spirit.
Greater Niagara
Formed 10,000 years ago, Niagara Falls thunders 40 million gallons of water a minute over a ledge 180 feet high and two-thirds of a mile wide. The resulting waterfall is so spectacular it has attracted visitors from around the globe.
There are rides to remember elsewhere in the region. At Six Flags Darien Lake Theme Park, hop on the Mind Eraser, a looping, suspended monster roller coaster from which your legs dangle in the air. At Letchworth State Park, raft through an amazing 17-mile gorge. For a more relaxing trip, take the Metrorail through Buffalo's downtown and enjoy dinner and a show.
Hudson Valley
The Hudson River has carved out a valley like no other in the world. The cities here swell with the story of America. Newburgh is the former site of General George Washington's headquarters. Near Beacon, folksinger Pete Seeger still weaves his melodic tales. The restaurants are legendary, their wine cellars brimming with Hudson Valley vintage. The orchestras play and the grand old music halls, like the Bardavon 1869 House in Poughkeepsie, sweeten the sound. When you visit, you'll revel in the beauty that has inspired great artists for hundreds of years and continues to delight so many tourists today.
Long Island
The ocean defines Long Island, blessing it with a wealth of maritime treasures. Among Long Island's many attractions are Jones Beach State Park, a six-mile beach and 2,400-acre playground; the North Fork, a fishing and farming area for more than 350 years; and Fire Island National Seashore, the famed barrier island resort. At the eastern tip of Long Island sits the historic Montauk Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington. Camp nearby on the beach at Hither Hills State Park and get up early to watch the sunrise.
On this 118-mile-long island, rich in maritime and agricultural heritage, stroll along the piers of harbor villages, tour opulent mansions and kayak on inland rivers through quiet wildlife refuges. Museums, zoos, working farms and a national laboratory science museum are all there for you to discover.
New York City
There are few guarantees in life, but this one is for certain: your next trip to New York City will be as exciting as your first.
Enjoy Broadway theater, performances at Lincoln Center and Radio City Music Hall. Visit jazz clubs, piano bars and nightclubs where you can dance until dawn.
The past meets the present in New York City: the Metropolitan Museum of Art recently unveiled the Greek Galleries, considered the greatest collection of its kind in the world. The American Museum of Natural History's Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth showcases earth's history, while the Hayden Planetarium transports visitors to the virtual beginning of time and space.
New York City has it all, from the best bargains to high fashion, from the greatest baseball teams to the latest films, and from ancient artifacts to contemporary art.
Thousand Islands-Seaway
The Thousand Islands - a geological masterpiece! The sparkling, clean St. Lawrence River, defining the northern border of New York State, is dotted with islands, nearly 2,000 in all. In the region defined by this river and the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, you can enjoy power boating, sailing, whitewater rafting and fishing, as well as golfing, tennis and hiking.
